A patient came to us suffering from a recurrent ingrown toenail — having endured significant pus discharge and pain before finally deciding to seek care.
Three months earlier, this patient had been treated at another clinic and had even undergone a removal procedure for an ingrown toenail, yet the condition had recurred and brought them to Gangnam Standard Orthopedic Clinic.

The portion of the nail that had not been fully removed during the previous procedure had embedded itself deeply into the skin along the inner side of the big toe. Before extraction, we had no way of knowing how large a nail fragment was hidden inside.
With the ingrown nail embedded beneath the skin, the pain must have been considerable. Even after surgery, the condition recurred — and the patient continued to endure it before finally coming in for care.
Approximately 1 cm of nail was concealed deep within the skin beside the big toe. Upon removal, the extracted fragment measured roughly 0.8 cm (width) × 1.2 cm (length).

Many patients worry about significant bleeding during ingrown toenail surgery — after all, it is still a surgical procedure.
As you can see in the photo, bleeding during ingrown toenail surgery is generally much less than with other procedures, so there is no need for excessive concern.
Because the nail fragment had embedded quite deeply, a small amount of bleeding was visible from the compressed skin tissue at the moment of extraction.

Here is the appearance of the big toe following ingrown toenail removal surgery at Gangnam Standard Orthopedic Clinic — a clinic focused on preventing recurrence.
As the local anesthesia was gradually wearing off, the patient rested briefly in the recovery room before leaving.
Ingrown toenail surgery is performed under local anesthesia, and discomfort is generally manageable. Patients who are anxious about anesthesia or worried about injection pain are often reassured to find that, because it is only local anesthesia, they can proceed with confidence and go home the same day.
Ingrown toenail treatment is covered by insurance (both supplemental loss insurance and standard health insurance), as it is a painful medical condition — not a cosmetic procedure.
At Gangnam Standard Orthopedic Clinic, we pay careful attention to preventing the recurrence of ingrown toenails that keep coming back two or three times.
