Ingrown Toenail: Causes of Toe Inflammation, Big Toe Pain, and Toenail Pain

A toenail that grows into the skin — ingrown toenail

It causes inflammation and pus beneath the skin of the toe, leading to toe inflammation, big toe pain, and toenail pain.

A patient who visited our clinic considering surgery due to toe inflammation and pus caused by an ingrown toenail.

Just looking at it, you can almost feel the pain.

The skin had become raw and macerated from the nail growing inward, and the infection had spread deep enough that pus was draining to the surface — the pain beneath the big toenail must have been severe.

To prevent an ingrown toenail from recurring, the root cause of the nail growing inward must be properly addressed.

Because an ingrown toenail can cause toe inflammation, pus, and pain, many patients find it too uncomfortable to wear regular shoes and end up wearing open-toed sandals or slippers with extra room at the front.

If an ingrown toenail is not treated correctly, pain may return every time you wear shoes that press on the big toe — even after removal surgery.

For those of you who rock climb, the tight fit of climbing shoes can press on the big toe and toenail, and some of you may be seriously wondering whether you need to quit climbing because of an ingrown toenail.

If that sounds like you, please visit Gangnam Standard Orthopedic Clinic near Gangnam Station.

Ingrown Toenail: Causes of Toe Inflammation, Big Toe Pain, and Toenail Pain

After undergoing ingrown toenail surgery at our orthopedic clinic, one patient told us that the pain from the ingrown toenail itself was so much worse than the surgery that the procedure felt like nothing at all.

If you are struggling with a nail growing into the skin of your big toe — whether called an ingrowing nail or ingrown toenail — we can help you with a simple removal procedure under local anesthesia. Our clinic places particular emphasis on preventing recurrence.
